TSK Academy Exhibiting at the Design for Healthcare Environments Workshop 2026

August 31, 20263 min read

On 29–30 September 2026, TSK Academy will be exhibiting at the “Design for Healthcare Environments Workshop at the RDS, Dublin,” and you will find us at “Stand 174.”

This event brings together professionals from across healthcare, design, architecture, construction, and related sectors to explore an important question: how can the environments we create better support the people who use them?

For TSK Academy, this conversation is particularly important.

The Environment Is Part of the Experience

When we think about healthcare environments, we often focus on whether a space is functional, accessible, and clinically appropriate.

But how a space feels matter too.

For an Autistic person, a person with an intellectual disability, someone experiencing mental health difficulties, or indeed anyone who is already anxious, overwhelmed, or dysregulated, the physical environment can have a significant impact on their experience.

Lighting, noise, layout, signage, waiting areas, privacy, predictability, and sensory demands can all influence whether a person feels safe and supported – or becomes increasingly overwhelmed.

A healthcare environment may be clinically excellent, but if the person accessing it cannot comfortably navigate, tolerate, or understand that environment, we need to ask whether the design is truly meeting their needs.

Moving Beyond Accessibility

Accessibility is essential, but creating genuinely supportive healthcare environments requires us to think beyond minimum standards.

We need to consider regulation, sensory experience, emotional safety, communication, and dignity as part of the design process.

Small design decisions can make a considerable difference.

Can someone understand where they need to go?

Is there somewhere quieter to wait?

Does the lighting create unnecessary sensory discomfort?

Are signs and instructions easy to process?

Can people anticipate what will happen next?

Is there choice within the environment?

Does the space support privacy without creating isolation?

These considerations can be particularly important for Autistic people and people with intellectual disabilities, but good inclusive design frequently improves the experience for everyone.

Safe, Therapeutic and Evidence-Informed Design

At Stand 174, TSK Academy will be focusing on how safe, therapeutic, and evidence-informed design can support people experiencing:

* Mental health difficulties

* Intellectual functional differences

* Autism and wider neurodivergence

* Sensory processing differences

* Anxiety, distress, and dysregulation

* Communication and processing differences

Our work approaches healthcare environments through a human lens.

Rather than asking only, what does this building need?” we want organisations and design teams to also ask:

What might the person entering this space need to feel safe, regulated, respected and able to engage?”

That shift in thinking can influence everything from major healthcare developments to slight changes within an existing waiting room.

## Regulation by Design

I will also be speaking at the event on Regulation by Design,” exploring how the environments around us can contribute to regulation or dysregulation.

Healthcare environments are often accessed when people are already experiencing uncertainty, pain, anxiety, or distress. For some people, sensory and environmental demands can add another layer of difficulty before an appointment or interaction has even begun.

We cannot remove every source of stress from healthcare.

But we can examine whether the environments we create are unnecessarily adding to it.

And sometimes, meaningful change does not require completely redesigning a building.

Slight changes matter.

Come and Meet Us at Stand 174

If you work within healthcare, architecture, design, construction, mental health, disability services, social care, or the development of public spaces, we would love to meet you.

Come and talk to us about neuroinclusive environments, regulation, sensory needs, emotional safety and how we can begin designing healthcare spaces around the people who experience them.

Because truly inclusive healthcare is not only about the care we provide.

It is also about the environments in which we provide it.
