Regulation by Design: Creating Healthcare Environments That Support People, Not Just Patients
What if the environment itself could help someone feel safer, calmer, and more regulated?
On 29–30 September, I will be at the Blue Theatre delivering a workshop on Regulation by Design workshop at 14:30 on 30 September 2026, exploring how we can create healthcare environments that support people, not just patients.
When we think about healthcare design, we often focus on function: where people wait, where care is delivered, how people move through a building and how services operate.
But the experience of an environment goes much deeper than that.
Lighting, noise, colour, signage, waiting areas, privacy, sensory demands, predictability and even the way people are welcomed into space can influence how safe and regulated someone feels.
This becomes particularly important when we are designing environments used by Autistic people, people with intellectual disabilities and people accessing mental health services.
Rather than designing these spaces separately, what can we learn from each other?
At this workshop, we will explore how principles of regulation, neuroinclusion, trauma-informed practice and human-centered design can help us create environments that reduce unnecessary distress and better support the people who use them.
Because a healthcare environment should not simply accommodate a patient.
It should support the person.
